I have an old computer that doesn’t even have SP2 on it, only the original WinXP Home. We got it in 2002, and every time I turn it on nowadays (it is online) it is really slow and I know it’s because it’s getting bombarded with tons of spyware and viruses that it can’t fight off.

I got a new laptop about a year and a half ago and have SP2 and most of the security updates on a disk that can be used to install them on any computer. I will do system restore on the old one, and use those updates from the disk, install anti-spyware and anti-virus programs and try to get it to a current XP software level before connected it to the internet.

Do you have any more suggestions so I don’t have to do system restore a bazillion times?

Thanks in advance, I just really wanna save my computer lol
For the first answerer, what is reformatting? Is it just reinstalling windows? I did that on that computer probably twice a year just because no matter how much I protected it it still got junked up.

So ya, I would back up my important stuff on another computer, restore that one. Then take everything and put it on that computer to restore the other one lol. For all that work I could probably invest in a portable hard drive. haha
The reason I’m concerned is because, we haven’t been using this comp very much lately,e veryone has been using my laptop. So Since I’ll be going off to college, I want to fix this one so it runs smoothlyfor my mom and brother to use.

I just put in a 568 stick of RAM which will hopefully be noticeable when I get the comp back in order.

I think i downloaded a virus unintentionally, i just eRecovered all my stuff it wiped my hard drive clean and re installed everything i had from when i first got my computer – will this have killed the virus or spyware that i thought i had gotten?

Thanks very much, as i am a bit worried.

I ran ad advance today (complete scan) and deleted the items it said were problems. I tried to go back to spywarebot (which now shows as an icon on the left side of screen and it wouldn’t let me download and run again saying it was an error and to abort, retry (which didn’t help) or ignore..even though it said it wsas not recommended to ignore, eventually I pushed it as I wanted to see if it still showed parasites after cleaning via adavance, but it wouldn’t run the scan. Why?
